PortraitAvatar - ArtRage 4 - SurfaceBook

A friend wanted a avatar for Steam based on a selfie with a bit of a cell shaded look. My initial thought was to use Sketchbook Pro 7 for this project because of how the application can easily create sharp vector-like bitmaps. But I wanted to try a slightly different approach to see if I could complete this using ArtRage 4. I purposefully kept the initial sketch loose and used the paint roller for the entire piece keeping the application of colors, shadows and highlights very loose as well.  I blocked in the highlights and shadows to help bring out the forms and worked mostly by instinct instead of letting the anal need to clean up all the lines take over. It was a more relaxing way to work and I was able to complete this faster as a result.

#BLM_How? - Indesign CC - Surface Pro 3

#BLM_How? - This is inspired by the misrepresentation by media of who and what the Black Panthers were as a result of the backlash from BeyoncĂ©'s song, video and Super Bowl performance for "Formation." These designs are not complicated or extravagant. They're more of a reflection of the times and my reaction to them, the need for change, the atrocities committed that allow racism to continue and the history that created the situation we live in today in the inner city and elsewhere.

Work! - IndesignCC - Photo Director 7 - Surface Pro 3

Cover mock up featuring a friend, Zakyyiah, that has a talent for portraits. As stated in the title Indesign CC and Photo Director 7 were used to produce this piece. At some point in the near future Indesign CC will be replaced with a solution that doesn't require a rip off subscription. If push comes to shove, I'll run with Lucid Press Layout and Design on Chrome OS which worked great on my Chromebook. Photo Director 7 has worked beautifully if a bit unconventional at times so I'm not missing Photoshop CC at all.

Hoverboarding WIP - Sketchbook Pro 7 - Surface Pro 3

This is one of the first sketches I completed with the Surface Pro 3 many weeks ago. I revisited it, cleaning it up and added a few layers to it, trying to figure out what to do with this at the moment.

Heroes Final - Sketchbook Pro 7 - Surface Pro 3

Final. Finally. I took my time with this piece because of the reasons behind its creation. Racism in entertainment specifically, American society in general. The basic narrative is, Black people can't be attractive, powerful, intelligent, sexual without being a slut, the hero/heroine, the savior or even relevant in American society. We're usually depicted as either a slave, weak in need of White help, a thug or a clown shucking and jiving for attention. When a suspect project "Gods of Egypt" can exist without casting Black or African native actors or actresses to play characters from ancient Egyptian mythology/history, that's ignorance at its most blatant. It's also typical of the times. History tells a different tale of African influence in the advancement of modern civilization (read: without African civilization, the world as we know it wouldn't exist) but this history is something many cultures of the world would rather ignore or forget. Times are slowly but surely changing but it's with a lot of resistance even among the Black community where self loathing and self hatred are not in short supply.

"Flight" WIP - Sketchbook Pro 7 - Surface Book

Flight* 02052016 update - I have a bit of a technical issue and had to do a Windows 10 restore due to broken Windows apps and a wonky app store. It was not fun figuring out the skinny on what was up with that. But I got it sorted even though it slowed me down a bit. Working on the Surface Book has been excellent minus that hot mess. Having a blast working with the new Pen and larger screen real estate.
